Coming up!

Later this week I will be posting interviews with Nina Canal of Ut and Laura Kidd of She Makes War.  But in the meantime, there have been some really nice things happening for lady guitar players in the blogosphere.  Comedian and host Marc Maron interviewed Carrie Brownstein for his WTF podcast.  It’s a great interview, with lots of good guitar talk.  KEXP also posted videos of Wussy playing Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop during SXSW.  Go now and enjoy.  I’ll talk to you again soon.

And Now For Something Completely Different

You may not know this, but in my other life (i.e. my day job) I am a secretary.  And in my other, other life — when I’m not typing things for people or playing cover tunes on the guitar in a mediocre fashion, I am a writer.  I write fiction mostly, but also poetry.  And because I have poetry friends, I participated in a new online poetry project.  So, if you would like to see yours truly in the motion pictures reading a poem by Chuck Bukowski, head over to A Poem From Us and check it out.

KEXP’S Wussy Write-up For SXSW

Ok, I’m a punk — I know — and in the bad, group-home living not cleaning up your dirty clothes from the floor, crapping in public kind of way, not the sexy, wearing safety pin-wearing and singing gutturally way. I haven’t been updating the blog, and I totally missed saying anything about SXSW. Would it make you feel any better to know that I’ve been playing a ton? No?

You know who has been writing? The bloggers over at KEXP.

In fact, here’s a wonderful little piece about your’s truly’s favorite band, Wussy. Just go read it, and you don’t really need me to update the blog.

RIP Whitney – How Will I Know Cover By Nicki Bluhm

Whitney Houston was a complex figure.  She had huge success and then plummeted quickly and deeply.  She was hugely popular, and extremely talented.  She was dogged by the press, and often became a caricature of herself.  A victim of addiction, it’s hard not to think of the recent death of fellow diva Amy Winehouse.  Houston was a huge force in the music world.  She won 2 Emmys, 3 Grammys, and 30 Billboard Music Awards.  We don’t yet know the cause of death, but she was was too young at only 49. Her death is sad and unexpected.

I was really touched by this sweet little cover of Houston’s hit song, “How Will I Know” by guitarist and singer Nicki Bluhm.  Hopefully you will be too.

Go Give Kaia Wilson Money Now. I Mean It.

Kaia Wilson is asking for cash on Kickstarter. The money will help her record her new solo album, and will help fund the supporting tour. She’s made a super cute video for her Kickstarter page.

Kaia was one of the members of the Homocore band Team Dresch, one of my favorite all-time bands. The albums Personal Best and Captain My Captain have gotten me through many a dark day in my teens and twenties. She was also a member of the catchy pop-punk band The Butchies, and has had four other solo albums. If you don’t know Wilson’s music, now is the time.

Rock Hall Is Opening A Library

The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame is opening its archives to the public.  They have an extensive list of books including biographies and literary criticism, as well as audio and video recordings.  I like to bag on the Rock Hall, but the archives look pretty cool.

A biography of Joan Jett is one of the over 3,500 books on the shelves at the newly-opened Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Library and Archives in Cleveland.

Today Is The Final Day For Weblog Award Nominations

If you haven’t nominated your favorite blogs yet for the 12th Annual Weblog Awards, today is your last chance.  Nominations close at 10pm Eastern.  I’ve got a post here with some suggestions.  And please feel free to comment below if you have your own suggestions.

Thanks to those of you that have already nominated Guitareste.  Every little bit of publicity helps toward my ultimate goal of world domination.

Please Consider Nominating Me For A Bloggie

It’s 2012, and that means it’s Bloggie nomination time. Please consider nominating Guitareste for an award. I think the one that probably makes the most sense is “Best New Blog.” The Bloggies are a great opportunity for recognition and new readers, so a nomination or two would be a great way to start off the second year of Guitareste.

As for other suggestions, I’m going to be nominating Feminist Music Geek for Music, New Dress A Day for the fashion category, and Hyperbole and a Half for Comedy.  If you haven’t seen those, check them out too.

Thank you!

Amy Klein’s Wonderful Spinner Interview of Cyndi Lauper

Guitarist, activist, and blogger Amy Klein (who I interviewed for this blog in May) recently interviewed Cyndi Lauper about a new documentary on women in rock. In the interview, Lauper dishes on the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, and name drops Wanda Jackson. Go check it out. It’s a good one.
